Unemployed teachers on protest lathicharged by police

Over 900 unemployed teachers who were on their way to the chief minister’s residence from the Parade Ground had to stop in their tracks as the cops opened a mild lathicharge to stop them from progressing any further.

The protesting teachers under the banner of Shiksha Acharya alleged police high handedness and claimed that the action was totally uncalled for as their protest was a peaceful one. Around 80 members have been taken into police custody.

The members have been protesting since June 1 for their demand to be reinstated as shiksha mitras in the primary schools.

Ramkrishna Mamgai, media coordinator of the group told TOI, “Even though our demonstration was peaceful the police started beating us to stop us from progressing to the CM’s house. They even arrested some of our colleagues and showed no pity even on the women members. It is very unfortunate that we are unemployed and then we get beaten up mercilessly. Some of the agitators were injured as well. We have worked for 12 years, but have now been left high and dry in spite of being as qualified as teachers.”

The teachers were earlier employed under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in 2001 at a monthly wage of Rs 2,500 to educate deprived children.
