Monsoon session of Parliament begins today, Finance Minister will present ‘Economic Survey’

The monsoon session of Parliament is starting from today. In the monsoon session, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget tomorrow on Tuesday. In this session, the opposition is also preparing to corner the government on issues like ‘NEET’ paper controversy and rail safety. Before the budget, the Finance Minister will also present the Economic Survey on the floor of Parliament today.

The monsoon session will start from today and will run till August 12. There will be 19 meetings in the entire session. Six bills are expected to be introduced in this session. These include a bill to replace the 90-year-old Aircraft Act. Parliament’s approval will also be given for the budget of Jammu and Kashmir in this session. At present, the Legislative Assembly does not exist in this Union Territory and it is ruled by the Center.

Apart from the Finance Bill, the government has also listed the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill for introduction, consideration and passage in this session. The proposed bill aims to bring more clarity and coordination in the role of various organizations working in the field of disaster management.

Other bills to be introduced and passed during the session include the Boiler Bill, which replaces a pre-independence law, the Coffee (Promotion and Development) Bill and the Rubber (Promotion and Development) Bill.

Ahead of the monsoon session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday called a meeting of leaders of political parties in Parliament. The Biju Janata Dal has announced that it will play the role of a strong opposition and aggressively raise issues of state interest in Parliament. Naveen Patnaik, who was elected chairman of the JD parliamentary party, has asked his party MPs to raise the demand for special status to Odisha.
