Australia defeated India by seven wickets in the rain-interrupted first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The match was stopped four times due to rain, forcing the decision to reduce it to 26 overs each. Batting first, India scored 136 for nine in 26 overs. Under the Duckworth-Lewis method, Australia were set a target of 131 runs to win. Australia won the match by scoring 131 for three in 21.1 overs, thanks to a brilliant innings by captain Mitchell Marsh.
Chasing the target, Marsh batted well for Australia and remained unbeaten until the end. Marsh, however, failed to reach his half-century, remaining unbeaten on 46 off 52 balls, including two fours and three sixes. In addition to Marsh, Josh Phillipe scored 37, while Matt Renshaw remained unbeaten on 21. For Australia, Travis Head scored eight and Matthew Short scored eight. For India, Arshdeep Singh, Akshar Patel and Washington Sundar got one wicket each.
