Manchester City has defended the Premier League title. The Skyblues beat Brighton 4-1 on Matchday 2, while Liverpool remained in second place despite their 2-0 home win over Wolverhampton, leaving them waiting for their first Premier League title.
Premier League Showdown in England
On the 38th and final match day leaders Manchester City and the Reds from Liverpool fought for the title in the Premier League. The starting position was clear, City went with a counter lead and the better goal difference in the final. Liverpool needed a victory against the Wolverhampton Wanderers and had to simultaneously hope for a slip-up of the Skyblues against Brighton.
In Liverpool, the Kloppo troupe did their homework and took early lead courtesy Sadio Mané (17 ‘). In Brighton, midway through the first half, things were more dramatic: the home side took the lead after a corner (27. Murray), but Sergio Aguero almost equalized just one minute later.
And in the 38th minute Aymeric Laporte was on the spot: After a corner kick, the Frenchman scored the 1: 2 – ManCity was back in the lead in the live table and had felt the hand on the title.
And in the second half, the Cityzens then made everything clear: In the 64th minute Riyad Mahrez scored with a nice long-range shot 3-1. Brighton would have had to score two goals at the time to make Liverpool a champion.
Ilkay Gündogan then brushed off a free-kick in the 72nd minute, leaving aside all the remaining doubts of the most daring pessimists. The German national player made a splendid ball into the cross. The ManCity fans started “Champion, Champion” chants – and Liverpool have to wait for the first Premier League championship.
