Google launches Gemini Live for all Android users

Gemini Live, the two-way voice chat feature for Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, is now available to all Android users. The feature was initially released for Gemini Advanced users through the Google One AI premium plan, but the company is now rolling it out to all users.

However, only the basic version of the feature has been made available to users. The choice between ten different voices is not available in the free tier. Earlier this month, a report had revealed that Google is rolling out the feature to all Android users.

Gemini not rolled out for iPhone users

Note that the Gemini app is still not available on iOS, so the Gemini Live feature is not available for iPhone users. However, Android users with a compatible device and the Gemini app will now see a waveform icon with a sparkle icon in the bottom-right corner next to the microphone and camera icons.

Tapping on the waveform icon will give the user access to the Gemini Live feature. Simply put, it is a two-way voice chat feature in which both the user and the AI talk through speech. Although the AI speaks fluently and shows slight voice modulation, it is not the same as the ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode feature that comes with emotive voice and the ability to react to the user’s words.

However, this feature is still useful when users are on the go and prefer to have a verbal conversation to know about the summary of an email or an interesting topic. The full-screen interface of Gemini Live is similar to a phone call. Users will see a sound wave-like pattern in the middle of the screen and hold and end buttons at the bottom.

How to use Gemini Live feature

  • On an Android device, download and install the Gemini app.
  • Open the Gemini app.
  • Find the waveform icon at the bottom right of the screen.
  • Tap on it.
  • First-time users will see the Terms and Conditions menu. Accept it.
  • Now you can see the Gemini Live interface.
  • You can start speaking to trigger a response from the AI.
  • Using the hold button, you can also pause the AI and continue with another prompt.
