Airtel, Vodafone and Reliance have started implementing mobile number portability (MNP) as of this month. Note that in March, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) director general Rajan S Mathews had said that telecom operators were likely to miss the pan-India Mobile Number Portability (MNP) deadline of 3 May 2015, with no new deadline provided then.
All operators, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Reliance Communications, as also state-run MTNL and BSNL, have announced full mobile number portability (MNP) from Friday.
MNP will enable customers to retain their mobile numbers even if they shift base to a new place.
Cost and procedure for mobile number portability
Customers can send a message to 1900 seeking change to another service provider and have to pay Rs 19 for the move. They can also visit any telecom operator’s store or call its toll-free number and follow the instructions or generate an 8-digit UPC code by sending an SMS, ‘Port (your mobile no)’ to 1900, fill the form and give relevant documents.
