Uttarakhand weather update: Red alert issued for Kumaon region

Monsoon rains have gained momentum in Uttarakhand. Heavy rains are continuing in most areas, especially in Kumaon. Heavy rains are also occurring in some areas of Chamoli in Garhwal and Dehradun. Landslides have also started due to rain in the mountainous areas, due to which roads have been blocked at many places.

Most of the rivers and streams of the state are in spate and nearby towns are in danger. Life in cities has also been affected due to waterlogging due to torrential rains. The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of heavy rain in most areas of the state even today.

Clouds remained in most areas since morning

On Tuesday, clouds remained in most areas including Dehradun since morning. After about nine o’clock, a period of light rain started in Doon, which turned into heavy rain in the afternoon. Till around four in the evening, torrential rains continued in Doon and surrounding areas. Due to which there was waterlogging and rivers and streams were in spate. On the other hand, light rain occurred at some places in Uttarkashi, Tehri, Pauri and Haridwar.

While, heavy rain was recorded in some areas of Chamoli and Rudraprayag. Due to light to moderate rain in Kotdwar, the national highway between Kotdwar-Dugadda remained closed for most of the time. At the same time, heavy rain occurred in Bageshwar, Pithoragarh and Nainital districts in Kumaon. Due to continuous rain, mercury has also dropped. In most areas, the maximum temperature has reached two to three degrees Celsius below normal.

Red alert issued for heavy to very heavy rain

According to Bikram Singh, Director of Meteorological Center, a red alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rain in all the districts of Kumaon division today. At the same time, heavy rain may occur at some places in Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Pauri districts, for which an orange alert has been issued and a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts. There is a possibility of heavy rain at some places in the next two days.
