These tremors were so strong that they were felt even in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. According to USGS, the intensity of the earthquake on the Richter scale was 7.7.
The tremors of the earthquake were felt till Thailand. Bangkok was the worst affected.
Many buildings were damaged in the earthquake
Some news agencies have reported that two consecutive earthquakes of 7.7 and 6.4 magnitudes occurred in Myanmar on Friday (March 28). It is being claimed that many buildings have also been damaged in the earthquake. The earthquake was so strong that its tremors were felt even in Bangkok, about 900 kilometers away.
How is the intensity of an earthquake measured?
The Richter magnitude scale ranges from 1 to 10.
The intensity of an earthquake is measured from its center i.e. the epicenter. That is, the energy emanating from that center is measured on this scale.
1 means low intensity energy is being released. 9 means the highest. These get weaker as they move away. If the intensity is 7 on the Richter scale, then there is a strong tremor within a radius of 40 kilometers around it. The biggest known earthquake was recorded in 1960 in Chile with a magnitude of 9.5.
