Tensions in West Asia show no signs of abating. While the situation appeared to be stabilizing following a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, a new drone attack reported in the Strait of Hormuz has once again inflamed the atmosphere. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has alleged that Iran carried out a drone attack on an oil tanker near the coast of Oman, prompting the issuance of a high alert across the entire region. According to ADNOC, the UAE’s state-owned oil company, the tanker—named MV Barakah—was the target of the attack.
Missile Attack Alert Issued in the UAE
In the wake of the attack, the UAE has issued a missile alert via mobile phones, advising citizens to seek shelter. According to reports, the vessel was struck by two drones. The incident occurred near the coast of Oman. Although it came as a relief that the tanker was empty at the time, the incident has nevertheless raised serious questions regarding maritime security.
UAE Labels Attack as ‘Maritime Piracy’
The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the attack, characterizing it as an act of “maritime piracy.” The government directly accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of responsibility, stating that the act constitutes a violation of international law. According to the Ministry, utilizing a critical waterway like the Strait of Hormuz as a tool for “economic pressure” or “blackmail” poses a grave threat to regional stability.
US Launches ‘Project Freedom’
This attack occurred at a time when the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) had just announced that it had successfully escorted two US-flagged merchant vessels safely out of the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, the US has launched a mission codenamed “Project Freedom,” under which guided-missile destroyers have been deployed. The operation involves the deployment of over 15,000 troops and advanced military assets, with the objective of ensuring safe passage for merchant vessels.
Alert in the UAE: Public Advised to Seek Shelter
Following the drone attack, the UAE has issued an emergency alert. People were asked to immediately move to a safe location. This warning was issued for the first time since the ceasefire on April 8. This makes it clear that the danger has not yet passed.
