After the High Court order and a month’s exercise, the Power & Energy Corporation has fixed the power consumption rates and units for the power employees. This will affect 7,675 personnel and pensioners of the state. It has been decided to implement the new rates from April 1, 2020. However, this decision will depend on the ongoing hearing in the Nainital High Court.

7,675 workers and pensioners in all three energy corporations are provided electricity at concessional rates. They cost about 2.5 million units of electricity every month. A PIL was filed in the High Court against it six months ago. On January 23, a meeting of the Board of Directors of energy corporations was held, in which fixation charges were increased and the limit of power units consumed annually was fixed. According to the decision, officers and personnel of different cadres will now have to pay the same fees as the general consumer on the increased units if they consume more power than the prescribed unit in a year.

Now consume it in a month or in a whole year it depends on the user. In such a situation, the installation of AC or heater will definitely affect their pockets and if they consume more power than the prescribed unit, they will have to pay electricity price like the common consumer.

The three energy utilities UJVN Limited, Power Transmission Corporation Uttarakhand Limited, Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited have facilities to provide power to the officers and employees at a concessional rate. They consume 30 million units of electricity annually, i.e. departmental workers spend 2.5 million units of electricity every month. This decision of the Board of Directors will have an impact on 7,675 personnel and pensioners of the three energy corporations. They have to pay an additional fee of Rs 200 for using AC.

First step: Installation of electric meter

The board of directors will first have to install meters to house all officers, employees and pensioners to make sure that this decision is followed. While the process of installing meters of the house of the officers of the corporation is going on, but the reality is that meters in the houses of all the workers have still not been installed. In such a situation, it will be difficult to get information about the electricity consumed by the personnel and pensioners till the meters are installed.
