Naomi Osaka named highest paid female athlete
Japan’s tennis star Naomi Osaka has become the world’s highest-grossing female athlete. She earned $ 37.4 million (about Rs 284 crore) last year. Forbes magazine released this list on Friday. Osaka has toppled Serena Williams from the podium who was at the top for the last 4 years.
Serena has earned about Rs 11 crore less than Osaka this time. However, both of them broke the world record of Maria Sharapova of Russia in terms of earnings. Sharapova earned the highest in 2015 at $ 29.7 million (about Rs 226 crore).
Osaka will represent Japan in the Olympics
22 year old Osaka is a winner of 2 Grand Slams. She won the US Open in 2018 and the Australian Open in 2019. At the same time, Serena has won 23 Grand Slams. Osaka will represent Japan at the Tokyo Olympics next year.
Osaka is number 29 in the overall list
Osaka ranks 29th on the list of all the world’s highest-grossing athletes. Serena is at number 33 on this list. She is currently ranked number 10 in the WTA rankings.
