SBI’s error leaves a woman in Kanpur with Rs 95000 crore in her account

Kanpur: In a strange twist of fate a domestic help worker from Kanpur became the richest woman on the planet albeit for a few moments thanks to State Bank of India’s accounting error. Urmila Yadav, who lives in Madarpur slum in Vikasnagar area of the city who had opened a savings account  with the SBI’s UPSIDC branch in Vikas Nagar as a part of the central government’s Jan Dhan Yojana with Rs 2000. She received a message saying her account had been credited with Rs 9,99,999 and another one showing that Rs 9.97 lakh had been deducted leaving her balance back to Rs 2,000. Puzzled she went to the bank for further clarification where an even bigger shock awaited her SBI passbook read Rs 95711698647130 as balance in her account making her richer than Bill Gates. After this incident, she turned to her guarantor who immediately approached the bank to know about the blunder committed by the bank.

Turns out, the goof up was a result of a process undertaken to freeze her dormant account by the bank itself. The bank has now activated her account, which is showing the correct balance of Rs. 2000.
