India and Russia declared joint winners of Chess Olympiad

India is the joint winner in the final of the online chess Olympiad. Russia has also been jointly selected as the winner in this final match along with India.

India made history in the Chess Olympiad on Sunday. India became the first winner in the online Chess Olympiad. However, India has been jointly chosen as the winner along with Russia. Actually, the final match being played against Russia could not be completed after the internet connection was lost. Due to which India and Russia were jointly chosen as the winners.

This is the first time FIDE, the International Chess Federation, has organized the Olympiad in an online format. During this time, the country was represented by skipper Vidit Gujarathi, former world champions Viswanathan Anand, Koneru Hampi, D Harika, R Praggananand, P Harikrishna, Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh against Russia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also congratulated this victory of India. While congratulating, PM Modi said that congratulations to our chess players on winning the Chess Olympiad. Their hard work and dedication is admirable. Their success will surely inspire other chess players. I would also like to congratulate the Russian team.

After the internet connection was lost, the FIDE president decided to give the gold medal, declaring both India and Russia teams as winners. India became the first champion in chess Olympiad history. Although Russia has been the winner of Chess Olympiad many times before.
