Stock market tumbles for third consecutive day

On Wednesday, the third trading day of the week, the stock market started on the green mark, but after the day’s volatile trading, both the indices closed with a fall in the end. The 30-share Sensex index of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at 58,339, down 237 points or 0.41 per cent, while the Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange slipped 55 points or 0.31 per cent to end at 17,476.

At the time of market close, about 1811 shares have risen, 1494 shares have declined and 136 shares have remained unchanged. Maruti Suzuki, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Tata Motors and Dr Reddy’s Labs were the heavy losers in Nifty, while ONGC, Apollo Hospitals, ITC, Sun Pharma and UPL proved to be top gainers. Barring realty, auto and bank, all other sectoral indices ended in the green along with FMCG on Wednesday.

Earlier, the BSE Sensex opened 267.36 points or 0.46 per cent higher at 58,844, while the NSE Nifty index gained 83 points or 0.48 per cent to open at 17,614 levels. On the other hand, on Tuesday, the Sensex closed at 58,576, down 388 points or 0.66 percent on the last trading day. On the other hand, the Nifty index slipped 145 points or 0.82 per cent to close at 17,530.
