Sumit Nagal becomes first Indian to win singles match in US Open in 7 years

Sumit Nagal ended India’s drought of a single’s player winning a match at the US Open. India’s top tennis player Sumit Nagal won a Grand Slam match for the first time in his career. He defeated American player Bradley Klan 6–1, 6–3, 3–6, 6–1 in the first round of the US Open.

Ranked 124th in the world, he will now face World No. 3 Austria’s Dominic Theme in the second round on Thursday. India’s young tennis player Sumit Nagal got direct entry into the main draw of the US Open Singles.

Nagal defeated Bradley in a match lasting 1 hour and 27 minutes. Apart from the US Open, Nagal has not played any Grand Slam so far, while World No-129 Bradley has played all four Grand Slams. But he has not been able to progress beyond the second round.

This is the first time after seven years that an Indian men’s singles player has won a match at the US Open. Before him Somdev Devvarman achieved this feat in 2013.

Last year, Nagal won the first set 6-4 in a match against Roger Federer while playing here for the first time. However, after this, the Swiss star did not give Sumit a chance to make a comeback. The Swiss ace closed out the match by winning the next three sets 6–1, 6–2, 6–4.

Sumit Nagal hails from Jaitpur village in Jhajjar district of Haryana. His father Suresh Nagal was interested in tennis. His father thought of making Sumit a tennis player. Nagal started playing tennis at the age of eight.
