Driver get death sentence; 3 awarded life imprisonment for murder of tourist couple in Chakrata
Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Sultan, after hearing the case of West Bengal’s Avijit Paul and his friend Momita Das a Fine Art Teacher working in Delhi, who came to visit Chakrata in 2014, gave his verdict on the four accused convicted of murder and eviction of evidence. The main accused Raju was awarded death by hanging and the remaining three were sentenced to life imprisonment.
On October 23, 2014, Fine Art Teacher Momita Das, resident of Delhi, came to Chakrata with her friend Avijit Paul. Avijit was originally from West Bengal, who had been staying in the Kalyan residence area in Delhi for some years. Momita and Avijitt booked a Bolero Vehicle belonging to Rajudas from the bus stand.
Raju took him into the Lakhhandal area and on the way he got his three companions in the car. Raju and his colleagues later strangled Avijit with a rope, and later later killed Momita after raping her. The accused also looted their purse, mobile and other valuables. The bodies of both of them were thrown at different places. Avijit’s dead body was found on October 31, and the rotten corpse of Momita on November 13, 2014 from the ditch in Purola of Uttarkashi.
With the police of Dehradun and Uttarkashi district, the police of Delhi’s Saket police station were engaged in linking the double murder case. On the basis of call details, the police reached the accused in the murder. Momita’s looted mobile was found on the main accused Bolero driver Raju’s Id, he was using it by putting a new SIM.
On his trail, the police arrested Kundan Das, Babloo and Guddu Das resident of Chakrata in the incident. On Friday, ADJ condemned the main accused Raju Das. While pronouncing the judgement, additional district judge Mohammad Sultan also slapped a cash penalty of Rs 65,000 on Raju Das and Rs 1,15,000 on each of the three other convicts.
