7 Indian boxers qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2020

For this year’s Tokyo Olympics, the Indian boxers have given great news to the country. So far seven Indian boxers, including six-time world champion MC Mary Kom and world championship silver medalist Amit Panghal, have qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics by winning in the Asia / Oceania Olympic qualifiers.

Mary Kom, the second seed of the tournament, fulfilled her dream of playing the Olympics for the second time by defeating 28-year-old Irish Magno of Philippines in the quarter-finals of the women’s 51kg weight category 5–0.

World No-5 Mary Kom looked a little defensive in the first round. But in the second round too, there was a tough fight between the two boxers and the Indian boxer maintained her lead. Veteran Mary Kom took full advantage of her experience in the third and final rounds to continue attacking her opponent and winning 5–0 to enter the semi-finals.

With this victory, Mary Kom has given India the seventh Olympic quota for the Tokyo Olympics so far. Mary Kom will face Yuan Chang of China in the semi-finals.

In the men’s section, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games champion Top Seed Panghal defeated Carlo Palam of South Asian Games champion Philippines 4–1 in the 52kg quarter-final match to clinch his place in the semi-finals. Also, fulfilling his dream of playing Olympics for the first time.

Panghal appeared in an aggressive manner from the beginning and continued to attack his opponent and took a 3–2 lead in the first round. The Asian Games champion maintained his attack in the second round and made several punches one after the other.
