Cong leader Sajjan Kumar sentenced to life imprisonment in 1984 riots case

Sentenced to life imprisonment for Sajjan Kumar, a fine of Rs five lakh has also been imposed. Earlier, the lower court acquitted Sajjan Kumar.

Three more sentenced to life imprisonment with Sajjan Kumar

The court has sentenced Sajjan Kumar, Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal and former Congress councilor Balwan Khokar to life imprisonment. At the same time, Kishan Khokar and former councilor Mahendra Yadav got 10 years in jail.
The High Court, while making a strong comment during this harsh decision, said that people were killed during the India-Pak partition in 1947, and after 37 years, Delhi witnessed similar riots. The accused continued to enjoy in political careers and escaped the trial. On Monday the Delhi High Court has given its verdict on a total of 7 appeals.

At the same time, the lower court had acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 Sikh Riots case in 2013 and the remaining accused have been convicted by the court.

After the conviction of Delhi’s veteran Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the killing of five people, the BJP, Sikh organizations alongwith the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have attacked Congress. Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: “The sentence given to Sajjan Kumar in this case of Sikh riots is a welcome move from the court. The victims have long waited for this decision. ‘
At the same time, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Joint MLA of BJP-Akali Dal (Badal) said: “We thank the court. Unless Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar are hanged, our fight will continue till then. ‘
