Monsoon rains prove to be boon for Naini lake

The incessant rains have proved to be a boon for Naini lake and its surrounding lakes. This time Naini lake’s water level is four times higher than last year. The same situation is of Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal and Sattal.

In summer the water level of the lakes of the district decreases, but this time due to periodic rains, snowfall and hailstorm and low tourist influx, the water level of Nainital lake has increased considerably. According to data from the Department of Irrigation, the water level of the lake was -0.90 inches below normal on July 18, 2018, while the total rainfall that year was 690 mm.

On 18 July 2019, the water level of Nainital lake was 2 feet 10.5 inches above normal. The total rainfall that year was 747.90 mm. This time the water level of the lake has been recorded at 8 feet 9.5 inches above normal on July 18, 2020, which is almost four times higher than the previous year. This time Nainital has received 883.20 mm of rain so far.

Water level of Satttal and Naukuchiatal lake also increased this time

Except Bhimtal lake, the water level of Sattal and Naukuchiatal lake has also increased this time. Naukuchiatal’s water level was 14.3 feet above normal on Saturday, while on the same day last year, its water level was 12.2 feet above normal.

Similarly, the water level of Sattal lake was recorded at 16.0 feet above normal on Saturday, which was 14.7 feet above normal on the same day last year. Here, the water level of Bhimtal lake has dropped this time. On Saturday, the water level of Bhimtal lake was recorded at 38.8 feet which was 40 feet on 18 July 2019.

This year, due to periodic rains, the water level of all the lakes has increased. Water is also being released from Bhimtal Lake for irrigation from time to time on the demand of farmers.

The tourist attraction Nainital lake has an area of ​​about 45 hectares. Its maximum depth is 27 meters. At the same time, the maximum depth of Bhimtal lake is 18 meters, maximum depth of Naukuchiatal lake is 36 meters and maximum depth of Satatal lake is 20 meters.
