Tokyo Olympics 2020: Bitter-sweet day for Indian contingent

Mary Kom’s loss in the round of 16 was a setback for the Indian contingent on 29th July which other wise had a good day at the Olympics today. This Olympics was the last Olympics of Maury Kom’s career. In her pre-quarterfinal match, Mary Kom lost 2-3 to Colombia’s player. With this defeat, Mary Kom’s journey in the Tokyo Olympics has ended. But apart from this, today was a great day for Indian sports lovers.

The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Rio Olympic gold medalist Argentina by 3-1. With the win, the Indian team has reached the quarter-finals moving to the second spot in their group. The team has bounced back remarkably after a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of the Aussies. Apart from this, India’s PV Sindhu also showed a wonderful game in badminton, defeating Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt 21-15, 21-13 in the singles event to reach the quarter-finals. This is Sindhu’s third consecutive win. Sindhu made it to the last eight by defeating Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in straight games in the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles badminton event. At the same time, India’s Atanu Das has also got entry in the next round in archery. First Indian archer Atanu Das qualified for the next round by defeating Chinese Taipei’s Deng Yu Cheng 6-4 in the men’s individual event, after which he defeated Olympic gold medalist OH Jin Hyek 6-5 in a shoot-off. After losing the first set 26-25, Atanu made a tremendous comeback, with the victory Atanu has reached the quarter-finals. Atanu won this match by 27-26, 27-28, 28-26, 27-28 and 28-26. In shooting, Manu Bhaker finished in the 5th spot in precision round of 25 meter pistol shooting. The rapid round will begin at 5:30 A.M IST and the scores of both rounds will determine which players make it to the final round. In the +91 kg category in boxing, Satish Kumar stormed in the quarterfinals 4-1 win over Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown.
