Uttarakhand rains: Naini lake water overflows to Mall road

The rains in Nainital in the month of October broke all the records till date. The situation became such that the Naini lake became so inundated that both its exit gates of the lake had to be opened. They too had to open up to theirfull capacity of one and a half feet. Despite this, till the night, the water of the lake kept overflowing on to the Mall Road and Naina Devi temple complex.

Normally in September, after the departure of the monsoon, the water level of Naini lake decreases significantly in October. On 18 October date it was 8 feet 6 inches in 2020, 8 feet 8 inches in 2019, 11 feet in 2018, 10 feet 3 inches in 2017, 7 feet 7 inches in 2016, 8 feet 5 inches in 2015. In both 2013 and 2014, the water level was 10 feet 5 inches. But on Monday the water level of the lake rose significantly.

EE KAS Chauhan of the Irrigation Department, responsible for the control of the lake, said that in October the water level of the lake has reached the highest level of 12 feet. Nainital has received more than 150 mm of rainfall since yesterday and if it continues into the night as predicted, it will become the historical record for the highest rainfall in October.

The continuous torrential rain since Sunday is raining as a disaster. Life has been disturbed by the rain. Several roads including the national highway have been closed due to landslides at places. Drivers and passengers had to remain stuck in the jam for hours. Traffic on Kumaon’s life line Jeolikot-Karnprayag NH has been stalled for 10 hours. Due to this, dozens of vehicles are stranded on both sides.

State receives 1428 percent more rainfall than normal

According to the report of the Meteorological Department, in the twenty-four hours from 8.30 am on Monday to 8:30 am on Tuesday, the entire state received an average of 36.7 mm of rain instead of 2.4 mm of normal rainfall. Which is 1428 percent more than the normal rainfall of 2.4 mm. Meteorologists are also shocked to see so much rain in October.

According to the report of the Meteorological Department, the highest rainfall of 115.6 mm was recorded in Champawat. The capital Doon and adjoining areas received the least rainfall of 19 mm. Nainital 64 mm, Pithoragarh 55.1 mm, Almora 36.7 mm, and  71.8 mm rain was recorded in Udham Singh Nagar.
