Wimbledon 2023: Djokovic defeats Hurkcaz in 4 sets; enters 14th Quarter Final

Former world number one player Novak Djokovic banked on his experience to defeat Hubert Hurkacz in 4 sets at the All England Club in London on 10 July 2023 to make it to the men’s singles quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tennis tournament for the 14th time. Djokovic, a seven-time champion and challenging for his 24th Grand Slam title, defeated Hurkacz 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-4.

Novak Djokovic is seeking  his 5th consecutive Wimbledon title. Novak Djokovic made it to the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament for the 56th time in his career. In the men’s side, the record is held in the name of Roger Federer, who reached the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament 58 times. Djokovic will take on Andre Rublev for a place in the semi-finals.

The 36-year-old defending champion defeated Hurkcaz in a four-set contest spread over 2 days. He won the match 7-6(6) 7-6(6) 5-7 6-4. Djokovic, winner of 23 Grand Slams, will face seventh seed Andrey Rublev of Russia in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece had to face defeat. He was upset by unseeded Christopher Eubanks of America. Eubanks is playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. He has made it to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time. Eubanks defeated Tsitsipas 3-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Tsitsipas is the first top-5 ranked player Eubanks has beaten.

Swiatek made it to the quarterfinals

World number-1 female player Iga Swiatek of Poland defeated 14th seed Belinda Bencic 6-7(4), 7-6(2), 6-3 to enter the quarter-finals of this grasscourt Grand Slam for the first time. She will now face wild card entrant Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. Svitolina defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9). Swiatek has won three championships at the French Open and one at the US Open.

Bopanna-Ebden in last-16 of men’s doubles

India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden have reached the last-16 round of men’s doubles. They defeated Jacob and Johannes Mande of Britain 7–5, 6–3 in the second round. The Indo-Australian pair hit five aces during the match while the rival pair could only hit two. Bopanna-Ebden had defeated Argentina’s Guillermo and Tomás Echeverri in the first round. However, the mixed doubles pair of Bopanna and Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada had to face defeat.
