PV Sindhu wins first Gold in Commonwealth Games

Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has created history by winning a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. This is Sindhu’s fourth medal overall at the Commonwealth Games and her first gold in women’s singles. Earlier she won silver in 2018 and bronze in 2014. In 2018, she also won a gold medal in the mixed team. She has won the gold medal in this tournament without losing any match. She has also won two medals in the Olympics before this. PV Sindhu’s performance in the Commonwealth Games 2022 has been spectacular. In the first team match for India, she won every match she played. After this, in women’s singles too, she won all five matches and won the gold medal. During this, she played 19 games in nine matches and won 18 of them. In the finals too she won in straight games.

Sindhu’s performance in women’s singles

Sindhu’s first match in women’s singles was with Fatima Abdul Razzaq of Maldives and Sindhu won the match easily. She defeated Fatima 21-4, 21-11 to reach the second round.
Sindhu’s second match was with Uganda’s Husina Kubugabe and Sindhu won the match by a margin of 21-10, 21-9. With this, she made it to the quarter-finals.
In the third match, the 27 year old faced Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei. In this match too, Sindhu won by a margin of 19-21, 21-14, 21-18. This was the first time in the Commonwealth Games 2022 that PV Sindhu lost a game. However, after winning this match she made it to the semi-finals.
Sindhu faced Yeo Jia Min in the semi-finals and Sindhu won the match by a margin of 21-19, 21-17. With this, she made it to the final and also confirmed atleast a silver medal.
In the final match, Sindhu defeated Michelle Li of Canada 21-15, 21-13 to win the gold medal. This is Sindhu’s first gold medal in women’s singles at the Commonwealth Games.
