Wimbledon Final 2023: Carlos Alcaraz defeats Djokovic in 5 set thriller

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz has created history. He has become the champion of Wimbledon 2023 defeating number two seed Novak Djokovic in an epic 5 set final. This was the second Grand Slam triumph for the 20 year old world number 1.

Djokovic won the first set 6-1. After this, Alcaraz made a tremendous comeback in the second set. The set was tied at 6-6 at one stage. A tie-breaker followed, which Alcaraz won 8–6 to take the set 7–6. After this, in the third set as well, the 20-year-old Spanish player outscored Djokovic 6-1, showing a tremendous game. After this, Djokovic made a tremendous comeback in the fourth set. The fourth set was won by the Serbian player 6-3. Djokovic was trailing 2-0 at one point in this set. In the fifth and final set the Spaniard held his nerve after breaking Djokovic early in the set and held his serve to win his maiden title.

Earlier on Saturday, 24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova of Czech Republic won the women’s singles title by defeating Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 6-4, 6-4.

Alcaraz stops Djokovic’s juggernaut

If Djokovic had won the final, it would have been his 24th Grand Slam helping him equal Margaret Court’s record for most Grand Slam wins between men and women. It would also have been Djokovic’s eighth overall and fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. In both these cases, he would have equaled the record of former legendary tennis player Roger Federer. Instead it was Alcaraz who avenged last month’s French Open semi-final loss against Djokovic and broke his 34 match winning streak at Wimbledon. With this win Alcaraz, also cemented his place as the world number 1 tennis player.
