JEE Main Rank Predictor: Calculate your Rank using NTA Percentile Score

National Testing Agency (NTA) has conducted the national level engineering entrance exam, JEE Main January session from January 6-11, 2020. Candidates are provided two chances to appear for the exams in a year. Candidates who have already given the first attempt must be eagerly waiting for JEE Main result which will be available on January 31, 2020. Though there is a way through which candidates can estimate their ranks in JEE Main 2020.

Candidates can predict their rank using JEE Main Rank Predictor tool. This article will give you all the details of how to calculate the percentile score and use it to calculate your rank. However, the rank calculated by this method might not be accurate, but you will get a fair idea of the probable rank. The process to calculate the rank might seem complicated, but in reality, it is a very simple procedure.

JEE Main Rank Predictor

The rank for JEE Main can be calculated by using the percentile score of the candidate. The percentile score should not be confused with the percentage. They are two very different terms, and both are calculated in different ways. Before giving the formula for calculating the rank, a few other terms need to be introduced, which are Raw Score, Percentile Score and Percentage. A description of these terms is given below:

Raw Score

The Raw Score refers to the exact marks that a candidate score in the exam. The raw score can be calculated by using the JEE Main answer key. It can be calculated by having a look at the number of correct and incorrect answers in the exam. You will have to add 4 marks for each correct answer and subtract 1 mark for each incorrect answer. JEE Main Answer Key has been released at the official website of NTA. Candidates can look at the answer key and match it with their answers to calculate the number of correct and incorrect answers.

Percentage

The percentage can be calculated after calculating the Raw Score. After calculating the raw score, then sum it up and find the total score in each subject and all together, which is the total Raw score in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics/ Drawing summed up. Multiply your Raw Score by 100 and divide it by the Total Marks of the Paper.

FORMULA:

Percentage = Total Raw Marks X 100 / Total Marks of the Paper

 JEE Main Percentile Score

The percentile score depends on not just your performance but also the performance of the other candidates giving the exam. It depends on the candidate’s performance in a particular set of examination. It will be based on the performance of all the candidates who appeared on a particular day in both the slots (morning and evening).

It can be calculated for the whole exam and also for each subject. NTA calculates the percentile score in the following way.

First, the Raw Score is calculated for each candidate and the scores of all candidates who appeared in the same set of the exam as the candidate.

For instance, to calculate the percentile score of a candidate X, who appeared for the exam on Day 1 in the morning session, the scores of the candidates with higher and lesser scores than the candidates will be looked at. The number of candidates scoring higher and lesser than the candidate X will be summed. This sum has to be multiplied by 100 and then divided by the total number of candidates who appeared in Day 1 of exam in the morning slot.

FORMULA:

(100 * Number of candidates who appeared in the same ‘session’ as the candidate with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN the candidate) / Total Number of the candidates who appeared in the same ‘session’ as the candidate

The National Testing Agency calculates the percentile score till 7 decimal digits. The percentile score for each subject can be calculated using the same formula.

The final rank depends on the percentile score. The percentile scores of all the candidates for all examinations conducted on all days are compared, and then a list of ranking is made. Candidates receive their percentile score for both sessions- January and April and NTA compares every candidate’s respective Percentile Scores in both sessions.

In case the candidate appears for only 1 session, then the score for the other session is taken as 0. The final score is decided based on the best scores among both sessions.

The National Testing Agency calculates the rank by using a formula which is given below:

JEE Main Rank = (100 – percentile score by NTA) * No. of candidates /100

Tie-Breaking Procedure

The tie-breaking procedure is applied to 2 or more candidates have the same score up to 7 decimal points. If this happens, then the score in Mathematics is compared, and if the score is the same again, then scores in Physics and then Chemistry are compared.

In case the scores in all subjects also come out to be same, then the age of candidates is compared, and the elder candidate is ranked higher. If their ages are same then names will be taken into consideration, and they have ranked alphabetically.

Benefits of JEE Main Rank Predictor

The JEE Main rank predictor can be used to get a fair idea about the rank that one can secure in the exam. Even though the predicted rank may not be final but still it is useful for getting an idea about one’s expected rank. The expected rank and expected scores can also be used to know which colleges the aspirant has chances of getting admission in by comparing them with the cut-offs of the previous year. The eligibility for IITs, GFTIs and NITs can also be checked by calculating the expected rank in JEE Main exam.
