3.5 magnitude earthquake jolts Chamoli

Earthquake tremors were felt in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli on Sunday night (July 7, 2024). The National Seismological Center said that its intensity was measured at 3.5 on the Richter scale. The center said that the earthquake occurred at around 9:09 pm. People, frightened by the tremors, came out of their homes. The epicenter of the earthquake was 5 kilometers below the ground surface.

Why do earthquake occur?

There are 7 plates inside the earth, which keep rotating continuously. The zone where these plates collide more is called fault line. Due to repeated collision, the corners of the plates bend. When more pressure is created, the plates start breaking. The energy below finds a way to come out and after the disturbance, an earthquake occurs.
