Life in the plains of Uttarakhand has been thrown into disarray due to scorching heat. In most regions, including Dehradun, the mercury has soared above 40 degrees Celsius, and relentless heatwaves throughout the day are causing severe distress.

The intense heat is expected to persist in most parts of the state today as well. The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for the plains.

On Wednesday (May 21), temperatures in the state’s plains were recorded as significantly higher than normal, while temperatures in the hilly regions also remained above average. Over the past 24 hours, maximum temperatures in Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, and Dehradun were recorded at more than five degrees Celsius above normal.

Battling Intense Heat and Heatwaves

Consequently, residents of the plains are having to contend with severe heat and heatwaves. In Dehradun, the intense heat was palpable throughout the day due to the blazing sun. Temperatures have been rising steadily over the past few days. Although no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the next two to three days, temperatures could drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the one or two days following that period.
