Sonam Wangchuk ends hunger strike after 26 days
Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended his hunger strike after approximately 26 days. Reports indicate that Wangchuk called off his indefinite hunger strike after receiving assurances from the government that his demands would be met.
Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital around midnight on Thursday and conveyed the government’s assurances, following which he announced the end of his fast. Sharing a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Wangchuk wrote, “I have finally broken my fast after 26 days in the presence of Union Ministers JP Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, along with senior leaders of the Apex Body of Leh-Ladakh.”

PM Modi Extends Best Wishes
Following Wangchuk’s announcement to end the hunger strike, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also posted on ‘X’, urging Sonam Ji to follow his daily routine as advised by doctors and to regain his weight as soon as possible. The Prime Minister added that he prays to God for Sonam Ji’s good health.
Assurance from the Central Government
While conveying the government’s assurances at Medanta Hospital—in the presence of Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, and others—Nadda stated that the government holds a positive stance regarding not registering cases against those who protested peacefully at Jantar Mantar in Delhi or those who participated in the march to Parliament on July 20, 2026. The Health Minister further noted that the government has already committed to holding a parliamentary discussion on education reforms concerning paper leaks and examinations.
Government Considering Compensation
Nadda added that the government is also considering appropriate compensation for the families of those who died by suicide following the recent NEET paper leak. Wangchuk mentioned that a total of 65 Members of Parliament (MPs) from various political parties had either met him or signed letters urging him to end his fast. In a post on ‘X’, he stated that this decision was taken following lengthy discussions regarding various conditions and in view of potential violence in the country. I will explain the details of the conditions in a separate video very soon. In the meantime, I urge all of you to remain extremely vigilant to ensure that no violence of any kind occurs anywhere.
