Simona Halep wins First Grand Slam title at French Open

World number one Simona Halep won the women’s singles title of the French Open 2018. In the final on Sunday, the Romanian star beat world number-10 Sloane Stephens of USA 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

First Grand Slam win for Simona Halep

Simona Halep was successful in winning the Grand Slam title for the first time. Halep, who was in the French Open final for the third time, overcame Stephen’s challenge in 2 hours and 3 minutes. She also became the first Romanian female player to capture Grand Slam in 40 years. The 26-year-old Halep had previously lost in the French Open final in 2014 and 2017. This year, she lost to Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the final of the Australian Open.

Halep defeated Spain’s World No. 3 Garbain Mugguruja 6-1, 6-4 to enter the finals of the current French Open. Meanwhile, the 2017 US Open champion Stephens defeated compatriot Madison Keys 6-4, 6-4 in the second semifinal.
