Uttarakhand’s naik Chandra Singh Karki martyred in J&K

Naik Chandra Singh Karki of 13 Rashtriya Rifles, who hailed from Pali village in Pithoragarh, was martyred in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

His mortal remains are being brought to his village and cremation is expected to take place on Sunday. According to Army sources, Karki continued to battle the terrorists even after being severely injured.

The 40-year-old Karki, who was recruited into the Kumaon Scouts in 1995 served in many places in Uttarakhand along with a four-year posting in Delhi and this was his second tenure in Rashtriya Rifles for which he had volunteered himself.

Talking about his elder sibling, Sado Singh said, “My brother always wanted to join the Army and even left his class X11 board exams when he got a call for recruitment. Indian Army was his first love which is evident from the fact that he voluntarily went to 13 Rashtriya Rifle and saved the lives of all the men who were with him. Even after being severely injured he kept firing at the terrorists.”

Karki who is survived by his two young daughters and wife was also a keen sportsman and loved playing cricket. “My brother was an extremely honest man and sacrificed his life for our country. I would like to appeal to the government to make better quality bullet proof jackets for the soldiers who are at risk every second when they are posted in the border areas. The least we can do is to ensure that they have the best possible equipment,” Karki’s brother said.
