Aman Sehrawat becomes youngest Indian to win individual medal at Olympics

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat performed brilliantly and won the bronze medal in the Paris Olympics. 21-year-old Aman defeated Puerto Rico’s Darian Toi Cruz by a margin of 13-5 in the match played for bronze. Earlier, Chhatrasal Akhara’s talented wrestler Aman had performed strongly in the pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals on Thursday, but lost in a one-sided fashion to top seed Rei Higuchi of Japan in the semi-finals of the men’s 57 kg freestyle category. Aman who is 21 years 0 months and 24 days old became India’s youngest individual medal winner at the Olympics breaking the record of PV Sindhu who was 21 years 1 month and 14 days old when she won silver in the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Although Aman missed out on ensuring a medal on Thursday, he performed brilliantly in the bronze medal match and gave the country the sixth medal in the Paris Games. India has won a total of six medals including five bronze and one silver in the Paris Olympics so far.

Aman was India’s only male wrestler in the Paris Olympics. However, he maintained the streak of medals in wrestling. India has been winning medals in wrestling in every Olympics since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sushil Kumar won bronze in 2008, Sushil won silver and Yogeshwar Dutt won bronze in 2012, Sakshi Malik won bronze in 2016, Ravi Dahiya won silver and Bajrang Punia won bronze in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This was Aman’s first Olympics and he has won bronze medal in his very first Olympics. Aman thus opened India’s medal account in wrestling at the Olympics.
