CWG 2026: Lovlina Borgohain ensures first medal for India

Lovlina Borgohain secured India’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games by receiving a direct entry into the semi-finals of the women’s 75kg category, thereby guaranteeing at least a bronze.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina received a bye in the first round of the five-boxer draw, confirming her place in the last four. She will face Tuvalu’s TKBP Tafaki in the semi-finals on July 31.

This marks the 28-year-old Lovlina’s first Commonwealth Games medal; she has previously won medals at the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, and Asian Championships.

Lovlina was the baton bearer while weightlifter Mirabai Chanu was the flag bearer for India at the Common Wealth Games 2026 opening ceremony.
