BGT 2024-25: Nitish Reddy’s scores maiden Test century in testing times

Boxing Day Test is being played between India and Australia in Melbourne. This is the fourth Test of the five-match Test series between the two teams. Currently the series is tied at 1-1. This as well as the next Test is important for India in terms of reaching the final of the World Test Championship. Australia won the toss and chose to bat first. On Friday, the second day, Australia scored 474 runs in their first innings. In response, India has scored 358 runs by losing nine wickets in their first innings till the end of the third day’s play.

Nitish Reddy hit a brilliant maiden test century. He is currently unbeaten on 105 runs. He has hit 10 fours and a six so far in his 176-ball innings. He also become the highest scoring batter from India in this series. Mohammad Siraj is also unbeaten on two runs.

Nitish shared a 127-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Washington Sundar, who came to bat at number nine. Both Sundar and Nitish played over 150 balls each to tire out the Aussie pacers. This is the first time in Test cricket that the eighth and ninth number batsmen of a team have played 150+ balls. Both jointly played 285 balls i.e. batted for about 48 overs. Sundar was dismissed after scoring 50 runs.

Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed after scoring 82 runs, Rohit Sharma 3, KL Rahul 24 runs, Virat Kohli 36 runs, Rishabh Pant 28 runs and Ravindra Jadeja 17 runs. Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep could not open their account. India resumed their innings at 164 for five on Saturday and added 194 runs. During this period, India lost four more wickets. Pant, Jadeja, Bumrah and Sundar were out on Saturday. At the close of days play team India was trailing by 116 runs with 1 wicket remaining.
