Sania wins in doubles while Serena takes takes the singles title on a Super Saturday in Wimbledon
Indian tennis’s poster girl Sania Mirza once again did the nation proud when she teamed up with Martina Hingis to lift the women’s doubles trophy at Wimbledon. Although Sania has won multiple grand slams this was her maiden in the women’s doubles category. This was also the first major trophy for the Mirza-Hingis team who had joined hands in March earlier this year and were the top seeds and number 1 ranked team in the tournament. For Hingis it was a third triumph in the doubles category after 17 years at the All England Club where she became everyone’s favorite as a 16 year old.
The Indo-Swiss pairing were taken the full distance by their opponents Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina and even trailed the Russians 2-5 in the final set, but the duo managed to hold their nerves and level the match at 5 games all before the roof was closed due to bad weather. Once the players returned to the court, the number 2 seeds were broken again and it was Hingis who served out the championship game, visibly enjoying the prospect of becoming the Wimbledon champion 17 years after she became the youngest singles’ winner.
Another title round the corner for Hingis
The 34 year old Swiss has a chance of adding another Wimbledon trophy to her cabinet as she has reached the finals of the mixed doubles category as well. She has teamed up with Leander Paes in the mixed doubles category.
Super Serena completes the Serena Slam
Serena Williams, the superwoman of tennis won her 21st singles Grand Slam and her 3rd of the year at the center court on SW19 when she defeated up coming player Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. The victory also meant that the 33 year old American now holds all the 4 major titles thus completing her second Serena Slam. The World number 1 now also has a chance to complete a calendar year Grand Slam if she wins this year’s US Open. She is also just one Grand Slam short of Steffi Graf’s all time record haul of 22 majors.
“I did the whole presentation, I did the whole walk around the court,” said Williams. “I was peaceful, feeling really good. Maybe a little after that I started thinking about New York.”

Sunday’s final pips the world’s best player against arguably the greatest player of all time and given the form Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have displayed this tournament the spectators are in for a treat.
