Bitter cold after heavy snowfall in US; high alert due to the threat of snow powerful storm

According to weather forecasters, a polar vortex of cold air revolving around Arctica is the reason for this weather condition. Now millions of Americans have been alerted due to the threat of a powerful winter storm. It has been warned that this season can bring big blizzards with the heaviest snowfall and coldest temperatures. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this powerful storm has started in the middle of the United States, which will move eastward in the next few days. More than 60 million people may be impacted by this storm. This storm will plunge the eastern part of America into the deep cold of Arctic air by Monday. In view of this, the NWS has warned of snow, blizzards and stormy winds from the central plains to the mid-Atlantic states.

A 2,400-km area is at greatest risk

The US Weather Department has issued a winter storm warning from western Kansas to the coastal states of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, putting an unusually wide 1,500-mile (2,400-km) area at immediate risk. “A disruptive winter storm could bring widespread heavy snowfall from the central Plains to the mid-Atlantic by Monday,” the NWS said in its latest report. The agency warned that areas from northeastern Kansas to north-central Missouri could see “the heaviest snowfall in a decade.”

Historically low temperatures

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said many areas of the US could see the biggest snowfall and storms in a decade. AccuWeather forecaster Dan DePodvin said, “This could be the coldest January for the US since 2011,” . He added that “well below historical averages” could persist for up to a week. With the jet stream diving south, temperatures are expected to fall below zero degrees Fahrenheit (-18 Celsius) in some places, while strong wind gusts will add to the dangers. The mercury could drop as much as 10 degrees Celsius below normal to the US Gulf Coast. The NWS forecast severe storms could hit the lower Mississippi Valley.
