800 earthquakes have been felt in the European country Iceland in the last 14 hours. The intensity of the biggest shock was 5.2. According to officials, there is a fear of volcanic eruption due to the activities happening under the earth. Meanwhile, the National Police Chief has declared a state of emergency there.
At the same time, the local authority has expressed fear that earthquakes of higher intensity may occur in Iceland within a few days. According to the island’s Met office, there have been 24 thousand earthquakes since October. Most of the earthquake tremors were felt from 12 to 2 am.
News agency AFP reported on Saturday that local authorities have issued evacuation orders to thousands of people living in the city as a precaution. Iceland has 33 active volcanoes, the most in Europe. Iceland sits atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a rift in the ocean floor. Due to this crack, more earthquakes occur there.
Significantly, between March and June 2010 a series of volcanic events at Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland caused enormous disruption to air travel across Western Europe.
