Low rainfall in August worries experts

August has come to an end and the majority parts of the country is still longing for the drenching rains. There are two more days left in August and according to the Meteorological Department, there is no possibility of heavy rain except in some states of the North-East and some areas of the South.

Least rainfall in August since 1901

August of this year has become the driest August ever since 1901. Due to the break of monsoon, rains were severely deficient in August except in Northeast and Himachal-Uttarakhand. Because of this, the average temperature of August is 27.55 degrees, while the average of 29 days was higher than this. According to this trend, when August ends after two days, it could be the hottest August in history.

So far, out of 29 days in August, 25 days have received less rainfall than normal. The third break of monsoon is going on in August which may continue till the end of this week. At the end of August, this monsoon break will be the fourth biggest monsoon break in history. There has been 33% less rainfall this August. This figure may increase to 35%. This will be the biggest rain deficit in August so far.

Monsoon rains deficient by 9%

The reduction is up to 61% in South India, 44% in Central India and 35% in Northwest India. Till August 29, India receives 241 mm of rain but this time it has received only 160 mm of rain. That is, there is a deficiency of 9% in monsoon rains, now it is not possible to make up for it even if there is normal rain in September. If this situation prevails, it will be the least rainy monsoon in the last 8 years.

What are the reasons for very little rain in August?

Meteorologists give some immediate reasons for the low rainfall in August – for example, a strong system did not form in the Bay of Bengal, one end of the monsoon trough line moved to the foothills of the Himalayas. Apart from this, El-Nino is being told to be active behind such a situation. Whenever El Nino is active, then the monsoon becomes weak in India. Due to this, there is drought in many states of the country.

El Nino has been active in the Pacific Ocean 14 times in the last 65 years. In these 9 times there was drought on a large scale in India. There, was drought 5 times but its effect was mild. President of Meteorology and Climate Change Skymet G.P. Sharma has expressed the possibility that in 2023 a situation like 1991 may arise. Actually, if there is 10 percent less rainfall than normal, then in the definition of meteorology it is called mild drought or moderate drought year.
