Yamuna crosses danger mark again in Delhi, government on alert

The water level of Yamuna river in Delhi has reached above the danger mark. Today the water level of Yamuna has reached 206.56 meters at 6 am. After heavy rains in many parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, the water level of Yamuna has started rising again due to release of water from Hathinikund Barrage. In such a situation, the Delhi government has again come into alert mode. Officials said the rise in the water level of the river could affect the relief and rehabilitation work in the flood-affected low-lying areas of the national capital.

The water level of the Yamuna river remained more than a meter above the danger mark of 205.33 meters on Monday morning, prompting the authorities to stop the movement of trains on the Old Railway Bridge (ORB). A railway official told that the operation of trains on ORB has been suspended due to increase in the water level of Yamuna. “The route between Delhi and Shahdara will remain closed and trains will be diverted via New Delhi,” the official said. According to officials, the rise in the water level of the river may affect the relief and rehabilitation work in the flood-affected low-lying areas of the national capital.

According to the CWC data, the rate of water flow at Hathinikund barrage in Yamunanagar crossed the one lakh mark at 9 am on Saturday and remained between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh cusecs between 10 am and 4 pm. Since then the rate of water flow is between 1.5 lakh cusecs to two lakh cusecs. “This amount of water poses a moderate flood risk in the national capital, which is still recovering from floods in the second week of July,” said Bhim Singh Rawat, assistant coordinator of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People.
