Rain breaks two decade old record in Delhi

It rained heavily throughout the day in the capital on Saturday. Because of this, the 20-year record of highest rainfall in a single day in the month of July was broken. The situation is that 133.7 mm of rainfall was recorded in Delhi from Friday night till 5.30 pm on Saturday, out of which 3.4 mm was recorded before 8.30 am.

Between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm, there was 130.3 mm rainfall, which is the highest in 20 years. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Sunday as well.

According to the Meteorological Department, there was 133.4 mm of rainfall on July 10, 2003, which is the highest till date. After this, in the year 2009, there was 126 mm of rain on July 28. In comparison, 126.1 mm of rainfall was received between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Saturday and 4.2 mm between 5.30 pm and 8.30 pm.

The rainy season will continue for six days

In July last year, there was a total rainfall of 286.3 mm. Compared to this, so far this year, 168.3 mm rainfall has been received in eight days, which is 58.84 percent as compared to last year. The rain spell is likely to continue for six more days. Heavy rain is possible on Sunday.

The Meteorological Department had earlier issued a yellow alert for Saturday. Orange alert was later issued in view of heavy rainfall. Later this too had to be changed to red alert. The reason for this is that after 8:30 in the morning, the rainfall intensified and between 11:30 and 2:30 in the day, the maximum and torrential rainfall occurred.
