Annual Global Livability Index: Vienna tops the list
The performance of South Asian countries including India in the best cities to live in the world was very disappointing. In this list of 140 cities, Delhi stood at 112th position, while Austria’s capital Vienna has secured the first position by leapfrogging Auckland. Mumbai ranked 117th in the list.
In the annual Global Liveability Index released by The Economist magazine, Auckland has moved down to number 34 this year, while Vienna has climbed to the top. The cities in this list have been ranked on the basis of many factors including political and social stability, crime, access to education and healthcare. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EUI) report, the top ten cities are Vienna, Melbourne, Osaka, Calgary, Sydney, Vancouver, Tokyo, Toronto, Copenhagen and Adelaide.
Karachi-Dhaka amongst least livable city
Simon Baptiste, EUI’s chief economist and managing director for Asia, said South Asian cities performed poorly in the global liveability index. Delhi (112) topped the 6 South Asian cities followed by Mumbai (117). Pakistan’s financial capital Karachi and Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka were ranked among the least livable cities in the world. The Chinese capital Beijing is at number 71 while the Syrian capital Damascus has been ranked at the bottom of the list.
Kyiv not included
While making this list, Ukraine’s capital Kyiv was not included because of the current war situation.
Best European cities to Live
Several European cities have made it to the top 10. The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen was at number two. Then there is Zurich in Switzerland. The Swiss city of Geneva is sixth and Germany’s Frankfurt is at number seven. Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is at number nine. Canada is the only country with three cities in the top 10. Of these, Calgary is at number three, Vancouver is at number five and Toronto is at number eight. Japan’s Osaka and Australia’s Melbourne are jointly at number ten.
