UK announces change in post-study Visas

Britain has announced new post-study visas for two years, making major changes to its visa regulations. Indian students are expected to benefit from this visa. Under the new visa, foreign students will be able to stay in the UK for two years after completing their studies. This new visa program will be effective from next year. Under the current rule, foreign students are allowed to stay in the UK for only four months after graduation.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday that the new changes will help students improve their career in Britain. Home Minister in the Johnson government, Indian-origin Preeti Patel said, “With the new changes, international students will be able to study science and mathematics or technology and engineering in Britain.” After studying, they will be able to make a successful career by gaining valuable work experience. This reflects our global outlook and will ensure that we continue to attract the best and brightest students. ‘

Post-study visa was discontinued in 2012

Two-year post-study visas were discontinued in 2012 during the tenure of then UK Home Minister Theresa May. After this move, there was a big drop in the number of students from countries like India in Britain.

British universities welcome decision

The decision to reintroduce post-study visas has been welcomed by the heads and representatives of UK universities. Vivienne Stern, director of Universities UK International, said, “About 82 per cent of Indian students are satisfied with their careers. We know how important it is for them to get an opportunity to work in the UK after obtaining a degree.”

The number of Indian students studying in the UK had declined since 2010. That year around 39 thousand Indian students were enrolled in British universities. This figure was reduced to 20 thousand level in 2017. Last year, however, there was an increase in this figure. In 2018, around 22,000 students arrived to study in the UK.
