89 students and 6 teachers arrested in Manipur University for protesting

In the wake of the recent agitation in Manipur University campus, 89 students and six teachers of the university were arrested on Friday. A senior official said that the mobile internet service has been discontinued in the state to prevent the spread of ‘false information and rumors’ for the next five days. IGP L. Kailun said in a press conference that on the basis of a complaint filed by newly appointed VC, Yugindro Singh, a team of officials conducted raids at University hostel and residential premises at 1 am and took students and teachers into custody. Professor AP Pandey, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, was suspended on 18 September till the completion of the ongoing investigation against him.
HRD Ministry has said in an order, “Keeping in mind the violation of law and order in the premises, Pandey has been suspended until the inquiry is completed”. In the suspension order signed by the Deputy Secretary of the Higher Education Department of the Ministry, it has been said, “Manipur government has informed that agitation against Pandey has led to serious problems and administrative crisis in front of law and order in the state.” . Meanwhile, the two-member independent committee formed by the ministry has started investigations of Pandey’s alleged administrative and financial irregularities since September 6.
