US Open 2022: Carlos Alcaraz wins maiden US Open title; crowned new world number 1

Spain’s 19-year-old tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has won the title match of the US Open 2022. The Spanish player defeated Casper Rudd of Norway 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the men’s singles final. The match lasted for 3 hours and 20 minutes. A crucial moment came in the third set when Alcaraz was serving 5-6 behind and Rudd got two set points. Alcaraz not only saved both the set points but also won the set in the tiebreaker. Alcaraz did much better in the tiebreaker and took a 2-1 lead. He won the fourth set easily and won the match and the title.

This match was held by closing the roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium between rain and 26 degree Celsius temperature. With this victory, Alcaraz has also become the world number one tennis player. This is Alcaraz’s 51st tour level win this season.

Carlos Alcaraz has become the youngest player after Pete Sampras to win the US Open title. Sampras became the youngest champion in 1990. At the same time, after the legendary Rafael Nadal, Alcaraz was successful in winning the Grand Slam title, the second youngest from Spain. Nadal won the French Open title in 2005. Apart from this, Alcaraz is the fourth player from Spain to become world number one after his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moya and Rafael Nadal.

The 23-year-old Norwegian player, Kasper Rudd, entered the final of a Grand Slam competition for the second time in the year 2022. He lost to Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open in June. Rudd is still waiting for his first Grand Slam title.
