Emmanuel Macron gets elected as President of France for second term

French President Emmanuel Macron defeated rival opposition leader Marine Le Pen in the presidential election on Sunday. In this way, 44-year-old Macron has become the first French President to be elected for a second term in 20 years. Macron got 58 percent of the votes in the election. Opposition candidate Le Pen could only garner the support of 41 percent of the voters. Police fired tear gas at people protesting against Macron’s victory in Paris.

Le Pen conceded defeat even before official election figures were out. Pen said that her fight for France would continue. She has called on other parties to unite against Macron. As early trends arrived, there was an influx of people congratulating Macron on the victory. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted in French that ‘together we will take France and Europe forward on the path of progress.’

Congratulating Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that ‘France is our close and very important ally. We look forward to working together in the future.’ There may be some difference in vote percentage after the official declaration of election results. A large screen was erected below the Eiffel Tower to show the results of the counting of votes. After the victory, Macron supporters celebrated with flags of France and the European Union. People were raising slogans in support of Macron.
