In addition to sending 33 percent women MPs in the Lok Sabha, Odisha has also sent the youngest woman MP in the lower house of parliament. 25-year-old Chandrani Murmu is a graduate in engineering. She has reached the House by contesting from Kendujhar Lok Sabha seat on the ticket of Biju Janata Dal (BJD). This seat is reserved for Scheduled Tribes. 25 year old Murmu is going to make history in Lok Sabha. She is going to become the youngest member of the parliament so far. Murmu defeated two time MP Anant Nayak of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  with a difference of 67,822 votes.

A few months ago, like any other girl, she was looking for a job and was preparing for competitive exams after completing B.Tech in the year 2017 from SOA University, Bhubaneswar. Chandrani said, “I was searching for a job after completing my engineering. I had never thought that I would do politics and become a lawmaker, my enrollment was unbelievable.”

Murmu thanked the people of Kendujhar and Naveen Patnaik, the chief of BJD, to give her an opportunity. Her maternal grandfather Harihar Soren was twice MP from Congress till 1980-1989. However, Murmu’s family is not active in politics. Dushyant Chautala of Indian National Lok Dal was the youngest member of the 16th Lok Sabha.

He was elected to the Hissar Lok Sabha seat in 2014 at the age of 26. Odisha has a total of 21 parliamentary seats, out of which seven women MPs have been elected. This number is 33% of the total MPs in the state. Odisha is the first state with 33 percent women MPs in Parliament.

How did Chandrani come into politics

Chandrani completed B.Tech in 2017 from an engineering college in Orissa’s capital Bhubaneswar. After this she was preparing for a government job. Her uncle Harmohan Soren retired from his job and is now active in social worker, and has good relations with the BJD leaders. Shortly before the election, he asked Chandrani to come to politics and talked about contesting the Lok Sabha elections, but Chandari did not take it seriously. Harmohan Soren, in every situation, got Chandrani’s ticket against BJP candidate. Chandrani received a notice about this from the Chief Minister’s Office on April 1.
