UIDAI to roll out facial recognition feature for Aadhar authentication

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced to introduce another facility for verification of the identity of the person. This facility will be started from September 15 onwards with telecom service companies at first. Companies will issue a new SIM card on this basis. After this the service will be included in the attendance (presence) in the bank, PDS and government office.

Face detection feature was pending from July

The Authority had earlier planned to implement the face recognition feature from July 1, which was later extended to August 1. Under this, the photographs attached to the application for mobile SIM card will be done with the potos taken in the respected person’s field. UIDAI has also proposed to impose a monetary penalty on telecom companies that do not meet this set target from mid-next month.

Instructions will be issued soon

UIDAI said that instructions will be issued soon for the implementation of face recognition facility for verification agencies other than telecom companies. The special thing is that the UIDAI has said that the match taken during the ‘live face photo’ and the EKYC will be necessary in those cases where the basis is being used to issue a mobile SIM.

Aim to prevent fingerprint mess

The UIDAI said that this step has been taken to prevent the possibility of failure in the fingerprint or to prevent cloning. This will strengthen the audit process and security of issuing and simulating mobile SIM. According to a circular of UIDAI, it is mandatory for the telecom service companies to match at least 10 percent verification of the face in the month of September with live (straight) photo. If this type of verification happened in lesser proportion then a penalty of 20 paise per verification will be imposed.
