Tokyo Olympics: Disappointment for India in shooting, tennis; Sindhu shines

The Indian pairing of Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina lost to Ukraine’s Nadia Kichenok and Lyudmila Kichenok in the first round of women’s doubles at Tokyo Olympics 2020. Sania and Raina lost in the first round 6-0, 6-7, 8-10. It was a hear breaking loss for the Indian pair who were 0-6 and 2-5 up at one point but their opponents staged a remarkable turnaround.

Earlier in the day, India had a disappointing start in the shooting range. India’s stars Manu Bhaker and Yashaswini Deswal could not make it to the finals of 10m Air Pistol. Both were in good form but failed to qualify for the finals by a few points. Manu Bhaker had to face difficulties due to a fault in her pistol, while Deswal fell behind in the beginning and then could not reach the top 8 even after staging a late comeback.

All was not gloom for the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics. Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal finished third in the repechage round of Lightweight Men’s Doubles Skull with a timing of 6:51:36 and qualified for the semi-finals.

Badminton star PV Sindhu wins

Indian women shuttler PV Sindhu opened her campaign at the Tokyo Olympics today. She was up against Ksenia Polikarpova of Israel. In this first round match, PV Sindhu easily defeated Ksenia Polikarpova in straight sets. In her first round match, Sindhu won 21-7 and 21-10. The ace Indian shuttler finished the match in just 28 minutes.
