Government rolls back JNU fee hike

The JNU Executive Committee has announced major roll-backs in hostel fees and other stipends. At the same time, a scheme has also been proposed for financial assistance to the students of Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

The Education Secretary of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, R Subrahmanyam, said that the JNU Executive Committee announced major roll-backs in hostel fees and other stipends. Apart from this, he said that a scheme has been proposed for financial assistance to the students of Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

Hostel rent in JNU was increased 30 times from Rs 20 to Rs 600 and the security fee of the mess was more than doubled from Rs 5,500 to Rs 12,000. Apart from this, students were asked to pay Rs 1700 as additional service fee every month, which the students did not pay earlier. It was sought after in the name of cleanliness and maintenance. Earlier no such fees were charged from the students. University students said that there was an atmosphere of curfew in the hostel. The rules were made so strict that students were being fined instead of studying.

The protests of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students against the hostel fee hike continued for the third day on Wednesday. In view of the students’ agitation, the police force in plain uniform was also present in JNU. The students who were protesting were adamant on demanding a meeting with University Vice Chancellor M. Jagadish Kumar.
