Patiala House Court issues new date for hanging Nirbhaya rape convicts

On Friday, the Patiala House Court issued a new death warrant against the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. Now, these convicts will be hanged on February 1 at 6 am. Earlier, the court had ordered the execution on 22 January. But the hanging had to be postponed due to the mercy petition by one of the culprits, Mukesh Kumar Singh before the President.

Finally, Tihar Jail authorities demanded a new death warrant against the four convicts after President Ram Nath Kovind rejected the mercy petition on Friday itself. The convicted Mukesh had filed an application seeking the mercy petition before the President, seeking the postponement of January 22.

During the hearing on the same plea of Mukesh by Additional Sessions Judge Satish Kumar Arora, government lawyer Irfan Ahmed told the court that the President has rejected Mukesh’s mercy petition. It is known that Mukesh’s mercy petition was forwarded by the Union Home Ministry to the President late on Thursday night. Earlier, the Delhi government and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal had also recommended the mercy petition be dismissed. Mukesh had filed a mercy petition two days earlier, which was promptly followed at all levels.

Meanwhile, Nirbhaya’s convict Pawan again approached the Supreme Court. Challenging the order of the Delhi High Court by filing a petition in the Supreme Court. Pawan’s lawyer AP Singh gave this information. Recently, the High Court dismissed the petition claiming that he was a minor at the time of the incident. The trial court has fixed the date of hanging the culprits.
