Unemployment rate highest in last 45 years as per official government data

The Labor Ministry released statistics of unemployment on the very next day of the Modi Government’s coronation. The government, who continued to dismiss claims of the opposition during the election campaign, finally admitted that the unemployment rate is at the highest level of 45 years.

According to the figures released by the government, the unemployment rate in the country was 6.1 percent during the financial year 2017-18. Although the Secretary of Labor also defended the government on the issue of employment. He said that the process of sampling has been modified. Therefore, these figures should not be compared with old figures.

At the same time, Congress has expressed the hope that Prime Minister Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will take effective steps to resolve this problem. The statement released by Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that economic growth has declined and unemployment is a big challenge on a large scale. We hope that the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister will prepare short and long term framework for generating employment opportunities.

Men more unemployed than women

According to the data, the rate of unemployment in men is higher than men in women. Talking about the different unemployment rates of both, the unemployment rate of men at the national level was 6.2 per cent while women’s unemployment rate was 5.7 per cent.

Most unemployment in cities

People migrate from the villages to the cities in search of employment. But seeing the latest figures, the condition of the cities is worse than the villages. Unemployment rate in cities is 2.5 percent more than villages. 7.8% of urban youth are unemployed, whereas in the villages it is 5.3%.

Opposition Claim proves correct

During the Lok Sabha elections, the Opposition had consistently attacked the government on the issue of  highest unemployment rate in the last 45 years. The report was not released yet. On the basis of the leak report, the government had been claiming the opposition leader’s claim to be false. Now after the elections are over and the new government has come into being, while the figures have become public, the claims of the opposition have been confirmed. Significantly, the steps taken by the government’s noteban and GST had adverse effects on industry and trade. As a result, a large number of people had to lose their jobs.
